Grocery School: The One Formula That Prices Every Dinner

Grocery School is one of the four schools in our kitchen: Grocery · Kitchen Skills · Safety & Storage · Confidence. Every lesson leaves you able to DO one real thing. This one prices a dinner.

The formula

Batch cost ÷ servings = cost per meal. That's it. Add up what the whole pot cost, divide by how many plates it honestly serves, and you know what dinner cost — not what the package cost, not what the store receipt felt like. Per-plate truth.

How we use it

  • In the Tight-Budget Kitchen Playbook ($11), 15 real dinners from Book 1 and Dinner Rescue are ranked by this computed cost per serving, in four tiers — so you can pick tonight's dinner by the number, not by hope.
  • The book prints 10 price-spike swaps: when one ingredient jumps, the swap that holds the line is already worked out.
  • And the pantry-economics rules: what to stock when it's cheap, so the formula keeps bending your way.

The honest fine print (we print it in the book, too)

Every price inside the Playbook is an EXAMPLE price with the same instruction we give here: check your store. Prices move by city, by week, by store — anyone who prints you a permanent cost-per-serving for your kitchen is inventing it. The formula doesn't move. Your numbers go in it fresh, every shop.

There's a free companion, too: the Cost-Per-Meal Calculator lives with our free tools.
